How do I use Bon Ami?

Simply wet a sponge or cloth and the surface to be cleaned, sprinkle some powder to make a paste, rub gently, then rinse. Since Bon Ami has no harsh chemicals, there’s no need to wear dishwashing gloves!

Extended contact with surface is not recommended.

When cleaning highly polished, painted or decorative surfaces, first test in an inconspicuous area. For best results, be sure to follow the use & care directions issued by the manufacturer or installer of any surface.

What surfaces can I clean with Bon Ami?

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser is safe and effective for many non-decorative hard surfaces including: many pots & pans (excluding non-stick cookware), cooktops and countertops, microwaves and grills as well as sinks, showers and tile. It can be used on toilets as well (just not inside the tank). Types of materials it can be used on include stainless steel, porcelain, enamel, fiberglass and acrylic.

Bon Ami Cleanser is not recommended for non-stick cookware, windows, mirrors or other glass surfaces, nor highly polished, painted, or decorative surfaces.

Always test first in an inconspicuous area on delicate, polished or glossy surfaces.

Can I mix Bon Ami with my other favorite cleaner?

Bon Ami works best by itself, following instructions on the label. While we do not anticipate any unfavorable or dangerous reactions when combining Bon Ami with most other common household cleaning products, we never recommend mixing cleaning products.

If you want to use a second cleaning product after using Bon Ami, just be sure to rinse thoroughly before using your next product.

Can I use Bon Ami on glass surfaces?

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser [gold label] is not recommended for windows, mirrors, or other glass surfaces.

However, Bon Ami 1886 Original Formula Cleaning Powder (red can) IS recommended for windows, mirrors, vintage auto windshields (not modern windshields which often have coatings),shower and oven doors, other non-decorative glass surfaces, and many other hard surfaces.

Can I use Bon Ami on natural stone surfaces?

Bon Ami is suitable for most countertops and some other natural stone surfaces, while SOME natural stone surfaces might be sealed and require special care.

Test in an inconspicuous area to ensure the desired result will be achieved. Use a soft sponge or cloth and plenty of water. Rub gently, then rinse.

For best results, be sure to follow the use & care directions issued by the manufacturer or installer of any stone surfaces.

Will Bon Ami remove rust / hard water deposits?

Bon Ami will remove rust / hard water deposits with gentle rubbing. Bon Ami should not sit on surfaces for an extended period of time.

Always test first in an inconspicuous area on delicate, polished or glossy surfaces.

Can I use Bon Ami in my dishwasher or washing machine?

While Bon Ami can be used on many hard surfaces, it should NOT be used in a washing machine nor dishwasher.

Is Bon Ami ok to use if I have a septic system?

With normal use, Bon Ami is compatible with any septic/sewage system.

What are the ingredients in Bon Ami?

Since 1886 we’ve used simple ingredients to produce a powerful clean without harsh chemicals. Bon Ami Powder Cleanser contains these 5 simple ingredients: Limestone (calcite), feldspar, soda ash, baking soda, and biodegradable detergent.

Does Bon Ami kill germs?

Bon Ami cleaning products will wash away germs, mildew, and other soils. However, they are not antimicrobial since they don’t kill viruses, bacteria, or mold spores on contact.

Does Bon Ami expire?

Bon Ami does not expire. The shelf life of Bon Ami Powder Cleanser is indefinite as long as the product is stored in a cool, dry place.

How should I store Bon Ami?

Why doesn’t it have a lid?

We’ve currently chosen to not add to the cost and price of the product by adding a lid.

If the current closure does lose its grip, some users might replace the closure with tape of their own. Consumers have also told us they use a small sandwich baggie over the top and secure it with a rubber band.

Where can I buy Bon Ami cleaning cake (bar)?

Bon Ami Cleaning Cake (bar) was discontinued in 2004.

Bon Ami 1886 Original Formula Cleaning Powder [red label] is the same recipe as the retired cakes and may be used on all of the same surfaces as Bon Ami Powder cleanser AND the 1886 formula can be used on glass, windows & mirrors and vintage auto windshields.

Bon Ami cleaning products are manufactured in the United States.

How do you pronounce Bon Ami? Why a French name?

Here at Faultless Brands, we have “Americanized” the pronunciation a bit. We say BON as in “bonnet” and AMI as in “Sammy” with the first syllable in second word getting the most emphasis. (Băhn-am-ēē)

“Bon Ami” means “good friend” in French. So, Bon Ami can ALSO be pronounced using proper French pronunciation rules (first word pronounced “bone”, last syllable of second word gets most emphasis). (bōn-ăh-mēē)

Is Bon Ami certified Kosher?

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser [gold label] is certified Kosher for Passover AND year-round use.

Bon Ami 1886 Original Cleaning Powder [red label] contains tallow and is NOT Kosher.

Can I recycle my empty Bon Ami container?

Our paper + aluminum package is one of the most eco-friendly on store shelves. It’s made from 65% post-consumer recycled materials and may be recycled again.

What’s the difference between Bon Ami Powder Cleanser [gold can] and the Bon Ami 1886 Original Formula [red can]?

We do offer two different powdered Bon Ami cleaning products.

The product most people now use is Bon Ami Powder Cleanser. It is better for hard water areas. For info on ingredients, how to use it and surfaces it is/isn’t recommended for, please see other FAQs in our list.

Bon Ami 1886 Original Formula Cleaning Powder is the original, “classic” formulation of feldspar and tallow soap. This product can be used on all of the same surfaces as Bon Ami Powder cleanser AND the 1886 formula can be used on glass, windows & mirrors and vintage auto windshields.

Do you make any liquid cleaning products?

All liquid Bon Ami cleaning products were retired in 2014. We have no remaining inventory.

Do you test on animals? Is Bon Ami ‘Cruelty Free’?

Neither of the current Bon Ami products have been tested on animals.

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser [gold label] does not contain any animal-derived ingredients.

Bon Ami 1886 Original Formula Cleaning Powder [red label] is the original 130 year old blend of tallow soap and feldspar, and might not be considered vegan or ‘cruelty-free’ since tallow is a product derived from animals.
